Pay-as-you-drive policies

The world can become too complicated, overwhelming us with choices. When there are so many, how do you decide between them? It all gets rather arbitrary when the differences between the different products and services are so small. But, every now and again, a change does come. Not in reducing the choices, you understand, but in adding a novel idea that might just force change in the particular market. So look at the very conservative world of insurance. Nothing has changed for centuries. You pay your premiums and then have to fight to make a successful claim. But now there’s a new player in town. Spreading to twenty-seven states on a trial basis comes pay-as-you-drive insurance. Unlike the conventional policy which estimates how many miles a year you are likely to drive, this is real usage insurance. Put simply: the less you drive, the less you pay!

We could all applaud the insurance industry. It’s finally gone green, caring for the environment by giving price incentives to drive less. That’s thousands of tons of carbon that stay in your tail pipes. The world will not warm as fast. More importantly, it begins the process of weaning us off oil. We are less beholden to the Middle East states. If we drive less, there will be fewer accidents. That means lower premiums as medical expenses fall and the cost of repairs is less. It all looks good for insurers. We should all be doing this anyway. Using our vehicles less, switching to public transport if we cannot walk or ride a bicycle where we need to go. The manufacturers are pointing the right way too with more miles to the gallon. The price of gas is going up again. Let’s all drive less and save money.

If you drive less miles at off-peak times and avoid accidents, your premiums will fall. Most companies are offering a small transmitter fitted into your vehicle which transmits information on the time, speed and length of your journeys. In other words, it ties in with your GPS system. It also helps track your vehicle should it be stolen. The others physically inspect your odometer readings. On average, the savings are about 30% off the standard premium. In some cases of ultra low use, State Farm in California is promising a reduction of 45%. So is PAYD the best invention ever? Well, it depends on what you think of allowing the insurers to collect all this information about you. You may save money, but there are privacy issues. The insurers could also decide to increase your rate if they discover you break the speed limits.

When you get your next batch of free auto insurance quotes, look to see whether you are lucky enough to live in one of the twenty-seven states, look for the option. You may find the savings make some sacrifice in your privacy acceptable. The biggest push is going to be in California where State Farm and the Auto Club of Southern California are rolling out major policies in February 2011. There hasn’t been all this excitement in the quiet pool of auto insurance since Henry Ford promised to sell colored Model Ts.

Software Problem

Of course, we can never feel sorry for insurance companies. They have been in a protected position for so long, even the bigger setbacks are less of a problem for them than other industries. Take this recession as a classic example. All the major financial players have suffered, whether banks, credit card carriers or lenders. But with the exception of AIG that was caught up in insuring the banks, all the insurance companies have been continuously profitable. This despite the twin attacks of rising medical and repair costs, and more people deciding to manage uninsured. One of the ways in which they have coped is by shedding staff in favor of automated systems. Indeed, many companies are now offering online insurance in which all the major transactions are through the website. This has enabled these companies to make significant staffing reductions and pass these on to the customers in lower premiums. There’s just one problem. The moment you start replacing people with software, everything works well so long as everyone stays within the programmed system. But once you have an issue not predicted when the software was designed, you have to wait for a human being to come along and deal with it. This leads to delays and second-best service. Many people accept this as a part of the package leading to lower premiums.

But new concerns have been raised by the Consumer Federation of America (CFA) about some software called Colossus and similar packages used to decide how much to pay on claims for physical injuries. This covers all those difficult to value elements like damages for pain and suffering which vary from state to state, with local courts differing in awards of damages. In theory, this is a great system. It stores tens of thousands of case reports and details of negotiated settlements, sorting them based on the type and severity of the injuries. So, if you wanted to know the average payment for a broken arms in Arizona, you have the answer in seconds. But equally, the system can be used to produce high or low averages. If an insurer wanted to save on costs, it could change the program to low-ball offers of settlement. Or it could eliminate some of the factors from your individual circumstances used to produce an overall settlement, e.g. how much you have lost in wages, what additional expenses have been forced because of your injuries, and so on.

Of course, human claims adjusters will look at each offer produced by the software, but most are given bonuses if they settle at these average figures. So if you are unlucky and have been injured, ask how the offer of settlement has been calculated. If software like Colossus is being used, insist on seeing a summary of the full range of settlements and always insist on an offer at the high end. If the auto insurance company refuses to answer, make a complaint to your local Insurance Commissioner. It may also be in your interests to take legal advice. Always remember the auto insurance industry is not a charity and it will try to persuade you to accept the lowest possible offer of settlement, no matter how serious your injuries.

Get car insurance quotes when you change address

Insurance is a slightly unusual business because it depends on your honesty to tell the insurance company everything it needs to know about the risk you want it to underwrite. The insurer cannot know everything. So there’s this rule. If anything significant happens to change or affect the risk in some way, you have to tell your insurer about it. Should you forget and later claim, the insurer is entitled to refuse payment on the claim if the forgetfulness is discovered. Is there a rule on what justifies you opening your mouth and speaking? No. This means you have to assume it’s better to speak rather than keep quiet.

What is this about changing address? Well, this is one of those hot-button insurance issues. In most states, insurers operate a ZIP code approach to setting premiums. If you live in an area where there’s high crime or there are a lot of accidents because of bad road design, your premium rate will automatically be higher. Only those of you lucky enough to live in California avoid this unfairness. Really all insurance should be based on your skills as a driver but that’s too much like hard work for insurance companies. It’s just so much easier to lump everyone together based on where they happen to live. Now, let’s say you know the ZIP code next to you has lower premiums so store the vehicle there whenever it’s off the road. This is always worth a try because this directly affects the risk of your vehicle being stolen or damaged overnight. Now let’s change the scale a little. Come the fall, all our young drivers have this urge to leave home in favor of college or university. Higher education is good for premium rates. To get in, you need a good GPA which entitles you to a discount. Many colleges and universities are also in good ZIP code areas so, if your vehicle is going to be garaged there, this is definitely going to affect the insurance rate.

In the year of 2008 a change of 1% was noticed in the car insurance premiums. Almost all the states have average premiums much higher than Arizona. Arizona has some rules that are very typical for the state. They should be performed on the road all the time. For example, the state allows the average speed limit of 55km per hour plus the average speed on a highway can be 60 km per hour. The blood alcohol percentage limit in Arizona is 0.08. There is a law in the state that is called Open Container law. What is this law about? By the rules of the law neither the driver not the passengers are allowed to consume alcohol while driving. If opened bottles of alcoholic drinks are found in the car the punishment will follow. You can use a hand held phone but you can forget you have a cell phone while on the road. If found on the road with a cell phone you may get your license suspended for as long as 90 days.

Getting a little more specific, if this your own vehicle or is it still in the name of one parent? It’s always better in the long term to be establishing your own track record as a driver. The longer you hide on your parent’s policy, the more expensive it’s going to be when you finally do get a policy on your own. Let’s say this is in a parent’s name, he or she will have to notify the insurer of the change of address during term time. If you are going out of state, there may also be implications if the new state has a higher mandatory liability coverage. Never assume you know. Always ask for new car insurance quotes if there are going to be major changes. If the vehicle is in your own name, this should light a fire under you. Check out whether the college or university has any special rates or offers driving courses that will earn you a discount. There is still cheap auto insurance out there for you as a young driver. You just have to know where to look.

Auto Insurance for Green Vehicles

Owning a green vehicle automatically makes it viable for you to have green car insurance as well. Because all cars are legally required to carry the minimum amount of insurance coverage imposed by each state individually, green cars also need to carry these types of coverage regardless of what their emission levels are. However, with green car insurance it goes a bit beyond the typical coverage against certain types of damage. The environment is getting worse and the need in green vehicles is constantly rising, so does the need in green car insurance. When you purchase green car insurance policy a part of the money you pay as a premium is transferred to certain funds that are aimed at minimizing the effects of bad environment and global warming. You can’t say that about typical insurance coverage for non-environmental vehicles, can you?

The number of people who are buying green vehicles these days is constantly rising, regardless of the fact that green cars are still too expensive in comparison with traditional vehicles. With such trends, more insurance providers offer green auto insurance solutions as the market of green vehicles is constantly expanding. However, in order to stimulate the purchase of green vehicles, insurance providers offer lower rates on green cars than on typical autos. It seems that even big insurance companies are recognizing the importance of stimulating green car sales and their initiatives can be regarded as a support of this trend. For some, it’s cheaper to buy an expensive green car and pay lower premiums than buy an old cheap auto and pay thousands of dollars each year.

Still, when green car insurance was only introduced and the number of green cars was low the auto insurance quotes green drivers had to deal with were much higher than today. But as the time passed and more green cars started roaming the roads (and more green auto insurance policies were sold) the rates went down and they are still dropping gradually. Today, there are about 40,000 green cars on the road and the number is increasing yearly. More and more people are realizing the fact that the carbon footprint has to be reduced and green cars are an effective solution to the problem.

There are numerous benefits of having a green car. Not only do you get lower auto insurance rates, you also help the environment and save some money on the gas. Of course, it’s not a big deal when comparing a single car to all the vehicles and plants that are fueling the global warming process. However, when people start acting individually over time the trend brings positive changes. The same applies to green vehicles.

Today there are only a few companies offering auto insurance quotes for green vehicles, however the numbers are steadily growing. Only a few years ago there wasn’t a single company providing green auto insurance but today there are already several big companies that either specialize in this new market or provide additional insurance services in addition to the traditional car insurance coverage. Today, having a green vehicle can still be regarded as a bit extravagant, but the same was the situation when the very first automobiles started roaming the streets filled with horses. The progress doesn’t stop here.

Auto Insurance Quotes

Having car insurance is mandatory in the vast majority of states, regardless whether it’s a personal or commercial auto you are driving. There are numerous enterprises that have their own vehicles used for commercial purposes as well as for personal use of their senior staff. Smaller home based businesses are also using commercial vehicles to a great extent and this segment of the market is currently on the rise.

Regardless of the size of the enterprise, it is mandatory to carry the necessary amount of auto insurance coverage in order to assure that any damages the commercial auto has caused will be paid for no matter what. Of course, liability coverage is a must and the policy should carry the state specified minimum amount of bodily injury and property damage liability as indicated in minimum state requirements. Of course, one can assume that if the vehicle is owned by the enterprise it’s the enterprise that will pay for the damage due to the accident. However, not all companies can assume such financial responsibility, especially if speaking about smaller home based businesses, and there’s no other way to gain the necessary financial support other than purchasing commercial auto insurance.

Quite many business owners purchase the necessary liability coverage above minimum limits and choose to include other types of coverage such as comprehensive and collision as well. Some business owners even include underinsured and uninsured motorist coverage to their commercial policies too, taking the fact that there are so many drivers with no insurance coverage on their cars out there on the road.

When looking for auto insurance quotes on commercial autos insurance companies usually employ the same mechanisms of calculation as for individual car insurance. The most weight in the final rates will have such factors as the amount and type of coverage to be included into the policy, the location of the business (traffic, theft rates and repair costs), as well as the actual driving record of the employee (or employees) who will be driving the commercial vehicle.

Having commercial auto insurance is of course very beneficial for the business owner. Having a vehicle stolen or damaged in a car accident can cause a serious drop in income for a period of time, especially if it’s a small business. Having your commercial auto covered by car insurance will assure that the repair will take a short time and you won’t have to pay for restoring the auto in order to get it back on track.

Still, as with individual insurance, it always pays to shop around and get as many auto insurance quotes for your commercial vehicles as you can. There are many companies that offer substantial discounts for numerous vehicles under a single commercial insurance policy. Try getting the best offer for the lowest amount of money, however keep in mind that you shouldn’t sacrifice the needed type and amount of coverage otherwise there’s no real point in insuring your commercial vehicles.

Will your auto insurance premium increase with a recall?

There have been hundreds of newpapers headlines over the apparent failure of Toyota to deal with what is called sudden acceleration syndrome. This is where you are just sitting in your vehicle with the engine running or driving it on the road and, without warning, it suddenly accelerates. If you believe the stories, we have had people unable to stop on the highways even with helpful emergency services telling the drivers to switch off the engine.

It seems some drivers are really determined to experience uncontrolled acceleration, and their experiences may make it more likely driver error is one of the main causes of the syndrome. Indeed, if you listen to the manufacturers, they all sing the same tune. With the accelerator and brake being next to each other, it’s easy for the driver to make a mistake and press the wrong pedal. In reality, the syndrome has affected almost every make of vehicle on the road over the last ten years. It was because of the scale of the problem that manufacturers introduced the shift interlock system which makes it impossible to engage drive unless you have your foot on the brake.

Let’s put Toyota’s problems in context. Every major manufacturer has had recalls with problems affecting driver and passenger safety. The air bags in the Acura MDX were defective, and a plague of electrical problems affected the headlights in the Ford Focus. One of the reasons why Toyota has attracted more attention than the others this year is a type of protectionism. You attack the safety record of foreign importers to boost the sales of locally produced vehicles. Taking the statistics overall, Toyota actually has a better safety record than most other manufacturers, i.e. fewer people are injured per mile driven. With virtually every make and model recalled, the manufacturers show they are paying attention. Your safety is important to them. But what happens to your insurance premium if your vehicle is recalled?

Insurance providers find any possible excuse to raise their premiums but it’s very unusual for rates to rise following a recall. That would be penalizing you for the manufacturer’s design defects, and most states have regulations in place to prevent increases solely based on a recall. If you think you have been victimized in this way, report the facts to your local Department of Insurance. Should you prefer to change insurers, make sure you follow the terms and conditions for cancelling the policy. Many companies impose penalties for early cancellation.

One word of warning – do not ignore a recall notice. Auto insurance companies like to find reasons to avoid paying out on claims. If you do not have your vehicle repaired and the defect causes an accident, that will be your fault and your claim will be reduced or refused. Even if there is no accident, the insurer can impose a surcharge or refuse to renew the insurance. It would be good if auto insurance companies always showed themselves in the best possible light. Unfortunately, the drive to make the maximum profit often makes them seem vicious and cold-hearted. There is no compassion in business. So always approach insurance like every other service. Shop around to find the best make and model of vehicle – one that does well in crash tests and is not popular with thieves. Then get auto insurance quotes from as many companies as possible and find the best deal. Rest assured. Recalls are the least of your problems and do not affect the premium rate over the short term.

Liability auto insurance

Looking around the US, all but three states mandate drivers to carry liability insurance. Some states have no-fault schemes. Others add in a requirement to buy a personal injury protection policy. As the healthcare reform bill was signed into law, many asked whether all insurance mandates were unconstitutional. This is a fun debating topic which sounds possible but will get nowhere. States have always had the right to impose conditions on people’s voluntary activities. If you want to drive, you have to carry liability insurance to pay compensation to anyone else you may injure. A more interesting question is the amount of the minimum requirements imposed by your state’s lawmakers.

Most of these minimums have not been changed for thirty and more years. For example, in 1972, Maryland set $20,000 for a person injured subject to a maximum of $40,000 for losses arising out of a single traffic accident. This was intended to cover medical treatment, loss of earnings while recovering, and so on. In 1972, the average annual salary was $12,000 and most hospitals charged no more than a few hundred dollars for treatment. Most new vehicles cost less than $4,000 to put on the road. You could easily buy a new home for less than $30,000. Looking back now, you wonder how we managed on so little money. Prices have risen fast for medical treatment. Injure the wrong person and the claim against you for loss of earnings is going to be frightening. Why should this matter? The liability coverage only pays out the minimum. You get to pick up the bill for all the other losses. So any savings or property you have may be taken to satisfy a judgment against you.

Should states increase their minimums? Many are thinking about doing so, but the politics of actually making new laws is difficult. During the recession, people are under financial pressure. Forcing them to spend more on vehicle insurance is not going to be popular among the poorer sections of the electorate. For the middle classes, there is the option to buy more coverage including an uninsured and underinsured policy. This is the American way. Those who have money can use it to protect themselves against losses. Those who are poor must take life as it comes.

In Maryland, the legislators have just increased the minimums to $30,000/60,000. This is curiously unreal. An increase to match the rate of inflation since 1972 should make the minimums $100,000/200,000. But, the political situation does not permit the lawmakers to restore the value of the minimums overnight. The answer was annual increases to inflation-proof the amounts. We would have arrived at $100,000 without anyone being too upset about it. But we have grown used to accepting the cheapest solutions even though millions of people across America actually lose money because of it. Why millions of people? These are all the victims of bad driving who never recover anything more than the minimums and suffer major financial losses as a result. This is injustice on a massive scale. And it will never be cured because it would cost too much to make the necessary increases. The only people who come out of this smiling are the investors in the auto insurance industry. Their profits and dividends have been rising steadily despite the recession. To protect yourself, always get auto insurance quotes from this site to find the most affordable coverage. Insurance may be mandated but you don’t have to pay excessive premiums.

Auto insurance tips for those facing an accident

A traffic accident is never a think to be happy about. Having even the smallest car accident will surely give you a lot of stress and headache. Not to say that things will be a lot worse if there’s someone injured or the damage to vehicles or property is serious. The best thing to do in such a case is to remain calm and not panic. You will need your cool head for evaluating the extent of damage and injuries before you even contact your insurance company to report the accident. And here are some things to keep in mind if you want to do that right.

Remain cool-headed

The first thing you should do is to calm down. It will certainly be hard especially if you never had accidents before. But this is very important for properly analyzing the situation and helping other people involved if they need help. You have to keep focus on all of the details so you can report them to your insurance agent or the police officer when you will be asked questions.

Call for help first

Prior to evaluating the damage and injuries there’s another thing you have to do. Call 911 and report if there’s anyone injured at the scene. If the accident took place in a location where it is dangerous to remain (heavy traffic, high risk of collision) it is better to move the vehicles to a safer place rather than waiting for the police officer to document the accident. This will save you from additional risk of damage or injury. When you have all of these things done you can take your camera and notepad for documenting the crash.

Gather evidence

Try to get as many pictures and notes from the scene while it is still as-is before the police start moving the vehicles. Then write down how the accident happened step by step as you remember it. If there’s someone who saw it happen around the scene, get their names and contacts, and ask for their version of the accident. It’s not wise to start arguing with them if you don’t agree with them. Just document as many evidences as you can to have plenty of information that can be presented to your auto insurance company or the police.

Help the authorities

When the police arrive to the scene you should cooperate and do everything they say. Report everything you are asked about and ask for an additional copy of the report when it’s compiled. It can be a bit stressful to deal with so much documents but it will make it easier for your auto insurance claim to be processed faster.

Here are some things you have to pay utmost attention when documenting the aftermath of the crash:

1. Compile a list of any personal items that are missing after the accident.

2. Document the physical condition of all the people involved in the crash, even if it’s a light headache. Sometimes a light pain in the arm can turn out to be a fracture a few days later.

3. Take pictures of all the damage resulted from the accident. Take close up pictures of the damaged car parts and any infrastructure that has been affected by the crash.

4. Don’t sign any documents or agreements if you aren’t aware of their content. Contact your lawyer or your cheap auto insurance company to learn what you should do in such a situation.
